I have seen people do (this is the hard part) well have a house basically on a hill on a lot with flat spaces with steps leading up the "hill" (sorry its the best I can explain)

I know what you're talking about. First follow this to build your house on a hill/slope.

To have step lead up the hill go to the top of the hill and place flooring on a couple of squares, then place the stairs.

I've done this with one house and it worked well.
